Duke is being given the 8th best odds to win the title by most sportsbooks, so this season shouldn’t be disregarded to serve as experience for next season. There’s no juggernaut, not even a faux-juggernaut like Gonzaga for the past several years. The three best players in the country probably won’t play a single clutch minute in the NBA (Oscar T., RJ Davis and Pete Nance).

Filipowski being a runaway advanced stats NPOY would be a good thing overall. Gives Duke a real chance to start Scheyer’s tenure with a national title, as long as he can get some legitimate offensive help from somewhere, whether it’s Proctor being top 10 worthy or Roach not being terrible all season or Whitehead being as expected. There’s always the chance at Duke that a bad freshman still leaves to follow Keels and Duval’s path, anyway. These guys can’t be trusted to do what’s best for themselves.

Is there any indication that Flip’s mindset has changed though? Usually guys who were planning on 3 and 4 years don’t suddenly turn around and take flight to get drafted 15th or w/e. I mean maybe he just takes the Kennard/Tre two year path?

While the outcome was great, this game was a 3 possession game with about 10 minutes to go. I watched the condensed game just now, and based on THAT:
Grandison is a much better athlete than I realized.
The shot selection from Whitehead was not ideal.
I feel like Duke got away with some sloppy passes that will absolutely be turnovers against better teams.
The defense was pretty terrible at times.
Rebounding is legit.

That's all I got, other than Roach needs to Duke the fuck up.

Do we have a Roach problem? I mean, I get it, they’re not gonna bench him, it’s only four games into the season, he’s a junior so give him time. But Proctor looked much better with the ball in his hands. And Proctor just plays so much harder on both sides.

I’m probably overreacting. But I’m disappointed with where Jeremy’s at right now.

I think Jeremy's blow-by ability will have value. We just need to figure out the correct way to channel it. During the tournament it suddenly looked like he'd figured out how to finish. Maybe he can find that again.

I don't think Proctor plays harder than Roach. He's just bigger, which allows him to be more effective.

I definitely think Proctor needs to become the point guard, however. And insofar as that has to be handled delicately, I guess it's a "problem." But I don't think it would be wise or necessary to bench Roach. That would be a chemistry/morale nightmare. And it's not like there's some no-brainer guard waiting to take his place.

Basically, I think he gradually needs to be made into a 2 guard who attacks advantage situations.

I'm getting onboard with Rome's Proctor hype. He seems to have some Tyusey abilities, in terms of just always knowing where the ball should be going in a given moment based on where the defense is - not necessarily creating open dunks for guys, but putting the offense in a slight advantage basically every time he touches it. Plus, he's easily our best shooter.

I do think he may continue to struggle against big, athletic teams that pressure the ball this year. That'll be the thing to watch with him.

Also, love that Dariq seems obsessed with 19-foot pull-ups. My entire evaluation of Scheyer will be based on whether he's still doing that come March.
