Music

I liked everything through Speaking in Tongues, and True Stories. Little Creatures shook my faith, Naked broke my heart.

Was reading something about artists who influenced musicians I like and came across CAN's Ege Bamyasi. Really like this:

Yes, it does. Soundgarden's apex – "Badmotorfinger," "Superunknown" and much of "Down on the Upside" – was at a level that few bands ever reach.

Cornell's later output was a mixed bag, IMO, and Audioslave was mostly a letdown.

I still loved Audioslave. It wasn't as significant as Soundgarden, but still enjoyable.

I think I was guilty of expecting way too much from Audioslave, so my perception has always been clouded by that.

I thought the Temple of the Dog album was his best work. Still listen to the whole thing and he carries it. 'Say Hello 2 Heaven' and 'Times of Trouble' are damn near perfect. 'All Night Thing' might be the most seductive song ever written.

So sad.

There are a ton of videos on YouTube of the Soundgarden show last night. It's dangerous, obviously, to try to make assumptions based on what we know now, but to my ears, he doesn't sound like himself on several of the songs. Of course, others might hear it differently. And cellphone audio clearly isn't the best representation of what it sounded like in the room.

Another grunge legend goes down. He was one of the best vocalists, and he sang with such ease. I loved all of his output, from Temple through Soundgarden and into Audioslave.

One of my new favorite Triangle bands, Youth League. On another note, my friends were responsible for the sound production on this -- both the live engineering and the post-mix-- and they did a fantastic fucking job. My only complaint is I wish the bass was mixed a little louder as the bassist has a really interesting, unique style.

I watched the Manchester concert today and really enjoyed it even though I don't like most of the artists.

Saw U2's Joshua Tree tour on Friday night in Louisville. Not a huge U2 fanboy, but I like much of their stuff and enjoyed the show quite a bit. Some guitar purists like to shit on the Edge because he's so effect-driven, but I think he's brilliant. When you're playing through two or three timed delays simultaneously, if you fuck up you've got a rhythmic mess on your hands. But he's the master of that sound.

It was my first full-on stadium concert, and they stuck mostly to the anthemic stuff and the three-piece-with-a-singer vibe, which is what they do best, IMO.

Haha I was 8 in '87 and what little I knew about U2 I hated because they didn't sound like Huey Lewis and the News.
