Depth/pt v defensive prowess and offensive prowess
With the talk about Duke’s tight rotation and its effect on our play, I thought it would be useful to look at the rotation of the nation’s elite defenses and offenses. Below is the breakdown of 30+, 20+ and 10+mpg players for each of the top 10 teams per Kenpom.
It looks like an elite defense pretty much means you have to use a big rotation with only 1 top defense having more than 2 guys playing 30+ minutes and only 3 playing fewer than 9 guys 10+mpg. Elite Offenses come in a variety of rotation sizes including 4 teams that play 1 or 0 guys 30+ mpg and 4 teams that, like Duke, play 4 guys 30+ mpg.
D rank school #30+mpg #20+ #10+
1 Gonzaga 1 6 8
2 UVA 1 5 10
3 S.Carolina 2 4 9
4 Florida 0 7 9
5 Louisville 2 5 10
6 Baylor 2 6 9
7 W.Virginia 1 5 10
8 GT 2 6 8
9 Wisconsin 2 5 8
10 California 3 6 9
O rank school #30+mpg #20+ #10+
1 Ok St 1 4 9
2 UCLA 4 6 8
3 Villanova 4 7 7
4 Gonzaga 1 6 8
5 UNC 1 5 9
6 Kansas 3 6 8
7 Duke 4 6 8*
8 Marquette 0 6 9
9 Kentucky 2 6 8
10 Saint Mary’s 2 6 8
*This includes Jeter and Giles who have each missed 10+ games, but the other teams have players who have missed games too, I have only excluded players who have played fewer than 10 games from every teams listed rotation…
…also, someone better at math than me could probably do a %pt played by the starters v the bench to eliminate the arbitrariness of my 30/20/10 cut offs and to avoid mirage depth from injuries as I am sure that Duke is not the only team which appears to be using a bigger rotation by my measure than they actually are.
Finally, can someone tell me how to post a chart so my columns line up?
