Science and Technology thread

@TS9 do you use a new Macbook to record music? I just got mine today, but I'm extremely bummed because the adapter I got (usb to usb 3) only seems to work with certain devices. I don't think there's anything wrong with the adapter. But it means I can't use my midi keyboard with this laptop, for example.

No, I use an iMac that's a few years old. I still use an old Firewire audio interface, so I actually have to run it through *two* adapters in order to plug it into the computer. It somehow works fine, even though it seems like it would've been a recipe for terrible latency and incompatibility.

I'm not all that familiar with what the new Macbooks have going on. Does it only have thunderbolt ports? Or can you actually plug in the connector you've got and it just doesn't work?

It's only got the USB-C port. So I got a USB hub, which is basically an adapter that goes from multiple USB ports to one USB-C cord. But for some reason only half my devices work with it. It seems arbitrary which ones work. My audio interface is fine. My external hard drive is fine. The Midi keyboard and my external DVD drive don't work.

I was reading up on it and it seems like because the port doesn't have an AC adapter inside of it, I might have to get a separate charger for the port so that my devices are getting enough power when I plug them into it. Very confusing and weird.

Yeah I can’t offer much in this particular predicament. I’ve never attempted anything like the setup you’re describing.

This is the USB hub. Most of the time it gets its power from the USB-C port in the computer. I guess enough passes through to power some devices but not others? Anyway, it annoys me when products have the option for a wall charger and don't include it with the product. I've had several guitar pedals that were the same. At least those you can run with a battery though.

Maybe try a powered usb hub.

Yeah, I would have gotten one of those in the first place if I'd known it would be an issue. We'll see if plugging in into a power adapter helps.

Another issue I'm having is that Microsoft Word is now asking me to log in. This didn't happen last time I moved all applications to a new computer. I have zero idea where this copy of Word even came to at this point.

So I now have a laptop that I can't write on and can't record music on. Pretty much a very expensive internet surfing device at this point.

Microsoft is the fucking worst. I had years-worth of Skype messages get purged for no reason last year (mostly stopped using the program back in 2016, but logged in again to find all my convos gone). Still makes me angry to think about. I am a proud Apple/Mac OS X guy.

I would happily use Pages if I didn't have to share files with people often.

Yeah, I'm discovering that it either needs to say "power delivery" or "pass through charging" somewhere in the description. What a clusterfuck.

How many millions did they piss away on that abomination?
Is this just Musk trolling the coal rollers?
