Science and Technology thread

Just watched a satellite hit a tiny asteroid millions of miles from here and it was exactly like this

Anyway, it was cool as fuck.

Between the elimination of standardized tests and this sort of stuff, will have such dumb doctors and engineers in 20 years.

I have 3 good friends who are University profs (each employed by different institutions). They are constantly hearing shit like this from students. That or students unwilling to accept their assignment wasn't perfect.

Congratulations to the bagholders, what a win. But I think this takes the cake for largest single entity bought at the absolute top of the market in the United States, if not the world. Musk could have literally bought it for >20 billion cheaper by just waiting 3-4 months longer

He's been hanging out with Candace Owens lately and she's been jumping to his defense on twitter. Candace Owens's husband is the CEO of Parler. Grifters gonna grift. Glad this is happening to Kanye.

I guess it makes more sense knowing this Twitter Blue thing exists. I had no idea. Still, no one is paying $20/mo for the checkmark, which means you’ll waste a few seconds of your time when you read every tweet to make sure it’s legit. That’s unusable IMO, and I’d immediately switch to whatever emerges as Twitter’s successor.

I think corporate & large institutional accounts will pay that. $240/year is meaningless to them. High prestige, very public people too.

Where would people go, in the short run? I'm not very motivated to move to something else. Unless they make you pay to mute people. That would get very expensive for me very fast.

Most of the people I follow don’t fit that description, though. For me, it’s a bunch of stats accounts and local sports team reporters/radio guys. I assume most people in younger generations are just following their friends, if they even use Twitter.

I’d expect a liberal competitor to arise that charges nothing for anything in the all-out growth phase, and as long as the UI/UX is solid, why wouldn’t people who hate Elon and Donald just switch to that?

With any new platforms the base opex required to be compliant is a massive barrier to entry. You have to spend billions annually on content moderation staff, related tooling, datacenters, federal privacy and data audits, and all of this other compliance stuff to ensure that their platform isn't a cesspool and adheres to regulations of each country they operate in. If they don't, they'll never get approved to the Apple or Google Play stores, have the FTC all over them (plus EU is even more hardline here), have trouble getting reliable hosting if they don't build their own datacenters, and correspondingly struggle to add users or advertisers. It's a serious uphill battle and anything that would operate at the scale needed to support millions of users moving over en masse would need all that in place before the first advertising dollar rolled in, in a business where even most of the popular companies already hemorrhage cash.

Haha, that's really good.

Bad news, Elon Musk doesn't care if people think he's an asshole because money.
