Buy or Sell

OK. Anyone for another buy or sell?

Buy or sell Sheed being in our starting lineup by mid-season.

I'd personally sell.

Sell, no way in hell. Curry's going to be our leading scorer this year.

If Seth/Quinn don't commit to defense and Sheed continues to develop, it's conceivable we'll see him starting.

Curry at the 1 and Sheed at the 2?

I can't handle anymore Curry at the 1.

I think Sheed can play the 1. :ducks

Granted, I'm not sure he can do so with aplomb this year, but this is an UNSELFISH passer, and he will be just as much of a bulldog as Tyler on D, and has a good 3 inches on him.

That being said, I still think he's going to be doing the vast majority of his damage off the bench this year.

But would you want Seth and Quinn guarding a tall and/or physical backcourt??

I believe Seth will be our leading scorer, closely followed by Kelly then Mason. Those are our new big three.

I'll buy Quinn averaging 8.5 ppg.

By the way, I'm not trying to be anal but both the threads you started could easily go in the Duke Basketball Discussion thread.

I don't think 'Sheed has the handle to be a point. If any half decent on-ball defender puts some pressure on him, he's giving it up.

His role this year should be to come in off the bench and play balls-to-the-wall defense and make as many open threes as he can (and I'm not convinced he'll be a good shooter but hoping he can be respectable). Don't try to do too much. Good defense and don't fuck up on offense.

I think your selling his offense short. Alot short.

We'll see. I'm not sold on him offensively, certainly not his ball-handling. I think he's a capable passer and will be a good decision maker but I'm not sure he can use the dribble at this point to get by good-and-up defenders.

His shooting I'm meh on. Don't think he's going to be as good as some are predicting but not as bad as I was originally fearing.

Like I said, we'll see.

I know everyone wants the world of these guys right away, but I could see him following a Daniel Ewing/Nolan Smith trajectory which would be terrific.

Every time I've seen him his spot-up three-point shooting has looked excellent. That's all he really needs to do for right now.

NOD, you bring up a great point about whether or not Seth and Quinn on the floor together can defend a bigger backcourt. One thing is for sure, both will have to vastly improve their D for us to be competitive come March against the big boys.

I try not to worry too much about the individual Defense of a player b/c K teaches such great team defense and if they can play great D as a team it will certainly hide some of the flaws of a smaller and less physical backcourt. Also, with Mason and Kelly down low, hopefully that can erase some of the mistakes and missed rotations that go on out front.

If Curry or Quinn can't hold their own on D, you're correct that a more physical Sheed could work his way into some big time minutes at either position. Hopefully these are problems of the past and they will be much more physical and able to guard the pick n' roll better.

I like the idea of pairing Sulaimon with one of the more experienced guards to make up for their lack of defensive prowess. I think you have to have Seth on the floor as much as possible since he's our only proven perimeter scorer, but we're going to have to insert Sulaimon when Seth and Quinn aren't getting it done defensively.

Add in Murphy's length and Jefferson's versatility and I don't see any way our defense is not better this year. It was already improving at the end of last year (from barely under 100 on Kenpom to all the way in the 60s, which means that for the last month or so we were probably more like a top 20 defense).

I bolded the games I think we lose. So, Buy.

This Virginia team will not be Duke. I've seen them in practice and they are the suck.

Cool, then either at Miami or at FSU for the 3rd loss. The thing that gets me about Uva is their style of play is difficult, and the play the hell out of some D.

They can't pound it inside without Michael Scott.
