Duke Recruiting General Discussion

Obi visiting Duke for real is crazy. Has there been a D1 transfer in the last couple of years that Duke fans got excited about who didn't at least give us a visit? I'm thinking Zeigler, Hood, Black, and Obi. That's

I've got so many Obi-wan jokes already in mind.

Seriously though, this would be a huge recruiting coup.

Obi and his family decided the offer was a generous one and jumped on board. The rest, as they say, is history, one which is rapidly getting more notice around the northeast. Through nine games, Obi has averaged nearly 24 points and 20 rebounds per game, all while holding down exemplary grades at GFA, one of the state's most challenging academic prep schools. The dueling impressive statistics have made the tiny gyms GFA typically plays in frequent destinations for Ivy League scouts from programs like Harvard and Columbia.

The sophomore, who is typically described as quiet and thoughtful, spends most of his free time studying or Skyping with his family back in Nigeria. While there is little question that his talent will carry him to the next level, his adoptive family and coach have been quick to limit his exposure, for fear of jolting his gradual acclimation process, which all said has been smooth for the relatively fluent English speaker.

"This kid, you'll never meet anyone that works harder at anything," Steve Eggers told the Post. "He's not a one-dimensional kid."

Almost exactly a year ago, Prep Rally brought you the story of Sean Obi, a Nigerian immigrant who emerged seemingly out of thin air to dominate the boys basketball scene in Fairfield County, Connecticut. Well, it appears that his early 2010 exploits were only the tip of the iceberg, as Obi is now busy demolishing the existing basketball records for his Westport (Conn.) Greens Farms Academy squad.

Perhaps more significantly, the 14 points and 30 rebounds marked the 30th consecutive game in which Obi has notched a double-double. Considering how rare those performances are at the high school level (it's the double-digit rebounds that usually provide the biggest obstacle, not the points), earning 30 in a row is nothing short of remarkable.

Precisely where that future lands the power forward/center prospect is certainly still open to interpretation. While Obi continues to get more attention, he lags off the national radar. He is unranked among prospects by Rivals.com, Scout.com and ESPN, and has yet to make any college contacts he has had public.

Hello! I'm Sean's American Mom. He is such a wonderful kid. Smart and kind and loyal. All good. And you ask about the colleges interested in him? Stamford, UVA, Harvard, Princeton, UPenn, Columbia, Tulane, Wake Forest, Dartmouth, Cornell...He's great pals with Andre Drummond and plays with CBC AAU with his American brother, Hunter Eggers. See you at the AAU tournaments in April. Las Vegas and new England.

just shows that a lot of these recruiting boards are about the hype, and not about the substance of going to games, watching kids actually play. The kids that go to the camps, do their own highlite reels get the hype....Sean is big, he has quick feet and soft hands...and is very strong. I was at this game and the other team had 2 6'9" players and they were terrified...settling for pull up jumpers and fade aways, rather than risk the wrath of Sean.

This is the team I'd realistically hope for in 2015-2016:

Tyus Jones SO, Grayson Allen SO
Rasheed Sulaimon SR, Luke Kennard FR, Matt Jones JR
Justise Winslow SO, Semi Ojeleye JR
Amile Jefferson SR, Chase Jeter FR
Marshall Plumlee RS SR, Sean Obi RS SO

Need another point guard. Weird that they aren't trying too hard to get one. They must think Tyus will be less impressive than Tyler Ennis as a freshman.

That would probably be K's next and last great defensive team. 4 bigs who can play. SFs who aren't tiny. Rebounding. Good seniors. No freshmen starting.

Down the drain once Semi tells Obi that Duke is no place for smart, hard working Africans.

I mean, that team has five guards, and all of them can or have played some point to some degree.

After Tyus, I'm not even sure how I'd rank them in terms of pointability. Maybe 2) Sulaimon 3) Kennard, 4) Allen/Jones?

Assuming Tyus and Sheed will be here for that season is the crazy part. More likely, the coaches are planning for a 3 man backcourt of Grayson Allen, Luke Kennard and Matt Jones. I don't think that's great.

This Obi possibility is amazing...seems like he would be a great fit on and off the court, from what I have read.

Yeah, I don't understand this decision in the slightest. Hopefully Dorsey opens his recruitment back up as rumored. (Of course, even he is not a true PG).

I wonder what happened with Obi and Harvard. Seems like the ideal recruit for Amaker. What I think happened is Harvard couldn't give him any financial aid because his parents do well enough financially (just a guess). So instead of going to an Ivy for like $70k a year, he went to the best academic school that offered him a scholarship. Good choice and it would all point to him going with K or Dawkins now, though northeast folks tend to think California is too far from home, even if Texas isn't.

All our transfers have pretty much been studs, which is weird considering it's the same staff that recruited certain players out of HS like gbinije and murphy.

I mean, Jones/Curry/Hood... those are three fantastic players.

And Roshown. We've never taken a transfer that hasn't done very well. All but Hood made 1st team all-ACC (and Rodney would if he stayed), and all but Curry have been/will be first round picks.

I mean, it makes sense that K would only take guys as transfers who were highly successful at their first school and therefore would likely be really good at Duke, but that is still a hell of a track record.

Tyus will most likely be here and getting 33mpg as a soph, leaving the rest of the time for the other 3 McDonald's All-American combo guards.

Seems like a big assumuption to make for the #4 recruit in his class. Granted, he doesn't exactly fit the NBA profile, but there are plenty of exceptions to that profile who have gone on to get drafted high and/or have NBA success.
