Duke Recruiting General Discussion

Seems like a big assumuption to make for the #4 recruit in his class. Granted, he doesn't exactly fit the NBA profile, but there are plenty of exceptions to that profile who have gone on to get drafted high and/or have NBA success.

I feel like the number of guys 6'1" and shorter who left after one year is exceedingly small. But part of my point also was that with three McDAA combo guards, the cupboard wouldn't exactly be bare on the slim chance Jones was gone (and Sheed also).

At the very least, without knowing those guys would be gone, I bet Duke would be a tough sell for a guy like Dorsey in 15-16.

I feel like we should at least recruit a solid Cook-level guy from that class. Someone in the top 30, but not so highly ranked that he's going to bolt if he only sees time as Jones's backup as a freshman.

I personally wanted Dorsey because he looked ridiculously fast. Seemed like he might be able to play great on-ball defense.

Yeah, I have no idea. Just something I have heard hear and there. Doesn't seem likely. Ben Simmons dropping LSU, another rumor, would make far more sense.

Yeah, I don't know what people are basing this sophomore Jones idea on, but he seems like a one-and-done level talent.

I respect your and Rome's opinion, but also respectfully disagree. There will be all kinds of question marks about his ability to defend NBA guards, he doesn't have that one really stand-out NBA-ready skill, and on top of that, he's not very big.

Here are the little guys that have gone pro after one year in the one-and-done era:

Cory Joesph 6'3.5" 6.5.5"
Kyrie 6'3.5" 6'4"
Avery Bradley 6'3.25 6'7.25"
Brandon Knight 6'3.25 6'6.75"
Josh Selby 6'3' 6'5.25"
Jerryd Bayless 6'3" 6'3.5"
Derrick Rose 6'2.5" 6'8"
Marquis Teague 6'2" 6'7.25"
Eric Bledsoe 6'1.5" 6'7.5"
Mike Conley 6'0.75" , 6'5.75"

Tyus (6'1.25" 6'3") would be the second-shortest OAD player after Conley, and have the shortest wingspan of any OAD player.

Good points. Maybe the Tyus optimists are just as crazy to think he will be so good that his skill is basically unprecedented.

In the end, I think NBA people realize 6-1 is very close to median height for a starting point guard today, so Tyus isn't really that small. 13 of the 30 starters are 6-1 or smaller. The biggest reason for Tyus to go will be the fact that he is already so polished - where is his room to make a significant leap in college? He will need to keep getting better just to maintain his draft position year after year. He can't surgically get longer arms or steal Grayson Allen's legs.

I think the "leap" he'd need to make is based on proving he can hit shots and defend as well against college comp as he did against HS comp. I mean, every HS player needs to prove that to an extent, of course, but for star HS who are undersized at any position, I think that's something the scouts want to see.

I was surprised to see your numbers about PG height, but I guess there are a lot of little guys doing well (Paul, Burke, Lawson, Pat Beverley, Bledsoe, Rondo, Conley, Chalmers...)

One thing about most of those OAD PG's, most of them, not all, were very, very fast. Burke, Lawson, Bledsoe, Conley were all spectacular athletes. I'm not familiar with Beverley, but you could say that Paul, Chalmers and Rondo were merely NBA level athletes.

Though I wouldn't call Tyus a jet, he's faster than he seems. Watching him the other night, I was impressed with the way he'd accelerate once he got into the lane.

Just seems like he is really good at changing speeds sort of like how Kyrie is. No motion with him seems wasted either

^aside from the fact that he is visiting, are there any positive vibes/rumours about enrolling @ Duke?

Obi on his Duke visit. This picture makes me aroused.
