Duke Recruiting General Discussion

I just realized it today. The internet doesn't make it clear either. Every one of his highlight videos is under his real name, while recruiting websites list him as Junior Smith.

I'm not as in tuned with recruiting a I should be so please excuse my ignorance here but is there a particular direction i heading towards in the next couple of classes? The last couple of recruiting classes it seemed we put an emphasis on guards and 3/4's by pulling in Sheed, Murphy, Amile, Semi, Matt Jones and Jabari.

We are not pursuing a PG in 2015, for some reason. This is based on the (imo, dubious) assumption that Tyus will stay two years.

We've already landed Kennard, we'll likely land Chase Jeter. We've landed Obi, who counts as a 2015 recruit, to my mind. Obi, Jeter, Jefferson, and Plumlee would shore up our post player rotation. I expect we're done with that for a while unless some amazing prospect like Thon Maker (not likely) actually wants to come to Duke.

So in 2016, we'd want to add a PG (Junior Smith) as well as Giles, who is supposed to be Jabari-like. We're also looking at Jayson Tatum who is a 2/3 per Scout.com. Winslow would likely be gone by then as well, so that would fill that void.

Hopefully some of those guys can slide down to SG in a pinch kind of like Junior Henderson did in 2009 for us.

If Matt Jone develops the way a recruit of his caliber should then we should be fine at SG since we have Grayson coming in this year and Kennard next season. Hopefully Sheed can take full control of the shooting guard role this season. I'm not a fan of the combo guard thing he was doing last season at certain points. If he can play point guard in a pinch if Cook and Tyus are in foul trouble then that's great but we will be in great shape in the back court if Sheed is given his role before the season and takes command of it.

I imagine Cook will float between PG and SG, probably as a backup in both roles (though that will depend on Sheed). He can play 25-30 minutes that way.

That doesn't seem to leave much time for Allen or Jones. The following year, with Cook gone and Sheed a probable departure, there will be more opportunity for them. Jones has already carved out a role (imo) as a tough, physical defender. He will play because of that. He'll play a lot more if he also remembers (learns?) how to shoot.

If Tyus and Sheed both leave, then our backcourt in 2015-16 looks serviceable but weak by Duke standards.

Allen (so.)/M. Jones (jr.)
Kennard (fr.)/M. Jones

We need one of Tyus or Sheed to stay. While I think there's a better than 50% chance of that happening, it seems like a gamble by the staff.

Just bet my friend $20 that we land Giles. I have no idea how we stand with him but fuck it.

If Matt can just get to be an average three point shooter he should be able to get a lot more time playing time as his value to the team would greatly increase. As a freshman he was a very solid defender and was part of our best defensive unit but it's impossible to play a guy significant minutes that has Josh Hairston worth on offense when we will have other guys at the guard spot capable of scoring the ball.

For our team to reach it's maximum potential next season a lot of things will have to be improved and corrected and one of those things is our defense out of the back court. By all accounts Jones gives a lot effort defensively but it certainly is not his strong suit. As we all know Cook isn't a strong defender. That leaves us with two guards that are average on their best days as defenders. That leaves us with Sheed, Matt Jones and Grayson Allen. From what we know now is that Sheed is a good defender and Jones is a good defender. For this team to grow and to be good defensively our back court needs to get a lot better defensively. Sheed can't be the only guard logging major minutes that is a good defender. Jones has to improve offensively so that he can find himself getting 12-15 minutes every single game.

I personally don't see how we can go with a line-up of Tyus Jones and Quinn Cook especially at the end of games. That line-up will fail as we get murdered endlessly on ball screens and guard penetration. One of Rasheed and Matt Jones have to be in the game for our back court defense to have a chance. Factor in Winslow at the three and all of a sudden things look drastically different for our defense from the 1-3 positions but again, Rasheed can't be the only guard that plays good defense getting high minutes. Jones needs to improve his jumpshot so he can get on the damn floor.

I have nightmares about the Tyus Jones-Quinn Cook backcourt. It would probably be as dominant as this last year offensively, or at least close. But it would also be worse than this year defensively.

Team defense might be a little better overall because of Okafor's size and Winslow. But I think we'd be seeing a #1-#3 offense and #50-#75 defense, or some such awful split. We'd probably win more games because of Tyus's late game composure and scoring ability, but it would still be a major waste of talent.

Probably gonna win that bet.

I got one of those twitter notifications that all our assistant coaches started following Caleb Swanigan on twitter. 6'8" or 6'9" 265lbs 2016 big.

God I hope the confidence about Junior, Giles and Ingram is correct. While smashing Huckleberry hound is always a treat, doing it with North Carolina kids he coveted would been incredible.
