Duke Recruiting General Discussion

I got one of those twitter notifications that all our assistant coaches started following Caleb Swanigan on twitter. 6'8" or 6'9" 265lbs 2016 big.

Wow. I'll be honest, he looks......not good. Maybe this is his 'lowlight' vid? The one in which he decides not to show off his vertical?

Reminds me a more svelte Kennedy Meeks. Probably could be really effective at the college level and at least a three year guy based on lack of vertical.

I think K really gets it now. He is doing everything reasonably possible to avoid another season with a sophomore Marshall Plumlee caliber guy as the only center on the roster.

I'm not as in tuned with recruiting a I should be so please excuse my ignorance here but is there a particular direction i heading towards in the next couple of classes? The last couple of recruiting classes it seemed we put an emphasis on guards and 3/4's by pulling in Sheed, Murphy, Amile, Semi, Matt Jones and Jabari.

We are not pursuing a PG in 2015, for some reason. This is based on the (imo, dubious) assumption that Tyus will stay two years.

We've already landed Kennard, we'll likely land Chase Jeter. We've landed Obi, who counts as a 2015 recruit, to my mind. Obi, Jeter, Jefferson, and Plumlee would shore up our post player rotation. I expect we're done with that for a while unless some amazing prospect like Thon Maker (not likely) actually wants to come to Duke.

So in 2016, we'd want to add a PG (Junior Smith) as well as Giles, who is supposed to be Jabari-like. We're also looking at Jayson Tatum who is a 2/3 per Scout.com. Winslow would likely be gone by then as well, so that would fill that void.

Just need one of Sulaimon or Jones to stay in '15-'16. If both leave, we'll have to live with Allen at PG in all likelihood.

I think this approach makes sense if we are trying to build a monster class in 16-17 and if Junior Smith will help with Harry Giles as is being speculated. Even more so if that class has to stay around for 2 years. Why take a pg we don't love and clog up the rotation for the following years' recruiting class (which is much stronger) to cover for the possibility that neither Sulaimon nor Jones will be around? If they love Junior Smith, market the PG role as something he can grab from Day 1. And it may be preferable to have a soph Allen there for one year as opposed to a lower ranked freshman PG.

Sulaimon is going to have to have a very big year just to jump back onto the NBA first round radar. Unfortunately it gets harder and harder to make big jumps in draft stock later in one's college career, and that's especially true for guards. It actually may be the case that he could benefit his own stock by running the point as a senior, like Nolan Smith did (albeit inadvertently as a result of the Irving injury). Sulaimon has some substantial holes in his game and he's somewhat undersized for an NBA 2 guard, so showing that he can play the point and showing off his court vision/passing ability, which I believe is the best part of his game, may help. I know he would prefer to leave but seems he is willing to ultimately take a pretty practical approach his future based on his decision this year.

This guy might be a bit redundant with Obi on the roster. He reminds me of Travis Watson, but slightly taller.

lol, was thinking the same thing. Looks a little like Kennedy Meeks without the explosive athleticism in that video.

It also may well be the first highlight video I've ever seen of a 6'8+ guy without a single dunk.

Yeah, watching the video again, I'm not the least bit certain he CAN dunk. I'm all for casting a wide net, but you have to make sure you throw the carp and the lampreys back into the water.

One thing to keep in mind is that the staff probably evaluates a ton of players who never end up as serious prospects.

Derek Smith (fr), Grayson Allen (jr)
Luke Kennard (so), Matt Jones (sr)
Jayson Tatum (fr), Semi Ojeleye (sr)
Harry Giles (fr), Chase Jeter (so)
Thon Maker (fr), Sean Obi (jr)

Is this right?

K really wants to take the one and done belt from Calipari to end his career.

Wait, so Duke is recruiting Dennis Smith, Junior Smith, and Derek Smith all for PG of the same class???

Yeah, I just noticed that too. I feel like the real top 5 is:

1) Maker
2) Woods
3) Smith
4) Giles
5) Jackson/Lawson/whatever

Huh, Slater deleted that innocuous tweet for some reason, so my post makes no sense. Here is a substitute tweet:

We need this guy and Dennard Smith.

Maker is obviously the top choice if he doesn't go to 2015, but Third Giles has to be the top realistic choice, with Junior Smith next.

Maker would be an awesome get. We need to get two big guys in that 2016 class since MP3 and Amile will be gone. Giles would be a great pick-up obviously and a guy like Maker would be too but for some reason I don't get the vibe that he will come here. It's just a stupid feeling that probably makes no sense but I just feel like he will end up elsewhere.

Giles and Smith are the two guys I want the most at the moment. If we could sign Smith early that would be huge as it should be a nice attractive piece for other recruits since everyone loves to play with a good point guard.
