NBA

They will smother people on defense if you sub Middleton in for Parker

Middleton can actually play and guard 2-4. They could go Bledsoe/Brogdon, Middleton, Freak, Parker, Maker. Middleton isn't shooting as well so far but was 43,3 3FG% last year.

TIL that the Oklahoma City Thunder outscore their opponents by 19 more points per 100 possessions without Paul George (+21.3) than they do with Paul George (+2.3). Impact is pretty much all on defense, wherein their opponents have an ORtg of 105.5 with George on the floor, and 88.8 without George on the floor.

But hey, he's a star!

Probably makes sense for the Lakers to offload Kuzma and Nance, who'll make a combined $4 million next year and $5 million the following year, so that they can be sure they can give George a max deal.

Looking at some on/off splits early season, there is bad news and there is good news for d00k lovers.

Bad news: Irving and Tatum haven't had a positive impact relative to their replacement minutes for the Celtics so far. Celtics are 0.5 points per 100 possessions better overall with Irving off the court. 0.1 better with Tatum off the court. The great Marcus Smart has been the best overall rotation player for the Celtics relative to his replacements, with strong offensive and defensive impacts. The Celtics are 9.6 better with Smart on the court. Similar story for Al Horford, as the Celtics are 9.5 better with Horford on the court, which is not too surprising, since their backup bigs (along with all backup bigs across the league) have severe flaws in their games. Aron Baynes has been the worst Celtics rotation player in this regard.

Good news: These stats are all messed up this early in the season, and shouldn't be taken too seriously. For instance, LeBron has been a negative player for the Cavs this season compared to when Iman Shumpert takes his minutes.

That's crazy given that at least as of yesterday, Baynes leads the whole league in DRating. Looks like he's currently worth 10 points per 100 possessions on defense, but -20 points per 100 possessions on offense.

I think this is the year Lebron misses the finals. This cavs team is not good right now and have major defensive problems.

It'll be interesting to see where lebron goes next year.

To your point, Kyrie is #15 in BPM in the entire NBA (of players that have played more than 200 minutes). Horford is #14. Tatum is #31. Smart is #66. This seems more in line with what the players have actually been doing on the court.

At this point I think Stevens is just letting Smart showcase how awful, putrid a shooter he is to tank his free agency value so they can re-sign him for cheap.

Watching Tatum bottle up Walker a few times down the stretch on switches made me weep. Dude is a savant and a many time all-star. I feel like he was wasted in the flood of star-crossed talent last year. If he were the 'pure play' star brought in to carry things like Rivers/Parker/Okafor/Ingram he'd have been NPOY. A less explosive Grant with a better feel for the game. So enjoyable to watch.

He’s like the Greek from the Wire.

Also that other Greek PG Nick Calethes hasn’t aged well either
