SignUp Now!A Russian general who was dismissed as the Kremlin’s top commander in Ukraine after heavy losses has died in Moscow after reportedly falling ill.
Colonel General Gennady Zhidko, a former deputy defence minister, commanded Russian forces in Ukraine for several months from last May. He was removed from his post after President Putin’s army was forced into a series of humiliating retreats in the north-eastern Kharkiv region of Ukraine in October.
Mikhail Degtyarev, the Kremlin-loyal governor of Russia’s far eastern Khabarovsk region, said that Zhidko, 57, had died after a “long illness.” He did not elaborate, sparking speculation on social media that he may have been poisoned.
He is the seventh Russian general to have died since the start of the war in Ukraine
