Science and Technology thread

I mean, the company is going to go under, right? You can’t lay off half the employees and also cut 80% of the contractors. The people who are left are not working 80 hour weeks unless they’re terrible so they can’t get other jobs. That leaves you with either no work getting done or pervasive incompetence.

At this point the entire platform could go down for days due to a single SEV that would have formerly caused a five minute disruption. The infra to run this kind of stuff at scale is really complex and fragile, plus them rushing out all of these half baked experimental features all of a sudden accelerates the tech debt. Playing with fire.

Outside of the mega-sized tech companies that overhired during/after the pandemic, it’s actually a very healthy job market right now in tech for the experienced folks. Good time to take severance and find something else. Slightly more challenging for new grads but it just means they need to drop their expectations a down a tier. I hope it results in more people considering what they’d like to work on vs how prestigious the company seems. Definitely due for a reset there.

I will miss that license plate thread you showed me the other day. That's about it.

Bite sized chunks of information aren't interesting to me. I use social media to offset my lackluster social life. I like social media sites that drive actual conversations and virtual friendships, like this one. Twitter drives snark, arguments, and lame Gen Z humor.

#oldmanrant over.
