I hate having to use twitter now, but it's currently the only place where all my interests can be aggregated into a simple, straightforward point-and-click timeline with live updates.

Can Jack not make another one? Twatter?

Elon is doing this with like 1/4 of the employees and as a private company, so his own admittedly enormous brain is showing potential competitors how this can be done at a smaller cost, without raising cash through the market. It would speak to how unprofitable the business is if nothing else emerges.

I think a realistic solution is something run by social liberals, with the political slant being openly advertised rather than awkwardly danced around, which charges $1/mo to use. Wouldn’t you all jump to that immediately if some obvious, well regarded social liberal like, say, Ashton Kutcher/Mila Kunis created it? It could be based on some gray area policy like “no idiots” or something, and I think it could work just fine.

I also wonder how much of Tesla’s recent devaluation is due to Elon’s toxicity via Twitter. There are so many other considerations that it’s hard to believe Elon being an asshole as the owner of a completely different company would affect Tesla’s stock, but it’s within reason to think many Tesla consumers are the kinds of people who would be put off by this reveal of who Elon is. I don’t think the far right normally are the ones buying Teslas.

That's EXACTLY what I said to a friend of mine, except I said "Twotter."

I like "Twatter" better though.

^^Indeed, this whole thing is financed by liberals who can’t be bothered to ride a bike or mass transit.

Also, does anyone believe this story to begin with? Nothing about it makes any sense. Somehow they can forget all of the lies over the past two decades and convince themselves that THIS exceptionally nonsensical story (even compared to his usual bullshit) is a thing which actually happened? WTF is this society?

It's 100% not true. Apparently, the jet tracker didn't even post on that day. Some other person geotracked the picture he posted of the "stalker" and it took place in a different jurisdiction than where the LAPD would handle it.

I haven’t tried any of the Twitter alternatives. What exactly sucks about them? Are they too slow? Not feature rich? Or do the people on them just suck? It doesn’t seem to me like the concept is that hard. If Gen Xers could create message boards 25 years ago, I’m pretty sure that supposedly smart younger generations can recreate Twitter.

I think the problem is that all of the alternatives were built when there was no reason to leave Twitter for a carbon copy, so they all tried to add their own twists and differentiating features. The criticism I keep seeing of Mastodon is that it's too complicated.

Mastodon is like a hybrid between Discord and Twitter. I've never been able to figure out Discord.
