Soccer

I don't follow soccer, but is there an actual wave of new young talent coming in here?

Yeah, we've landed a few big-name dual nationals recently - mainly Musah and Dest. We've also gotten a few lesser-known guys (like Siebatcheu just the other day). And there appear to be lots of guys in the next age cohort who are interested. We seem to finally have a group of young guys that are playing fairly well for big clubs and are actually perceived as "cool" by young players in Europe.

Our core going forward is super young right now:

And of course every single one of these guys will get injured and we'll end up fielding a team of scrappy MLS guys.

oh wow this list is much more extensive than I realized. Only heard of Pusilic, Reyna and now Musah. I just assumed we'd have a 50 year old Clint Dempsey still out there

Watched 3 full soccer matches today. Two were MLS games and the other one of the USA U-20 men's team. Of all the players I saw today, I was really impressed with Quinn Sullivan for the U-20 team. Very active both with the ball and without, showed good feel and looked to make the right play. I have no idea what level of prospect he's considered but I was very impressed with him.

LAFC just signed Gareth Bale which gives me an excuse to post this video of one of my favorite goals. Going to be fun watching him destroy MLS before he gets injured.

From what I can tell, he is a decent prospect. Plays for Philly, who has a good track record lately. I think we need one more win to make the U-20 World Cup (next year?) and two more wins to make the 2024 Olympics.

Kind of misleading with two draws and a modest goal differential, but they've been solidly controlling every match. Excited to see what happens in the knockout rounds.

Except for the back half of the Wales game. But, yeah, they really played well against England.

I still think that our guys are too small to prevail against big, physical back lines.

Just relieved it’s over. The whole group stage was so nerve wracking. I think I am capable of enjoying the rest of the tournament, whatever happens.

Very similar situation. And getting in first is like winning that noon second round game on Saturday.

Not sure why the Saudis are half-assing this. The top 10 soccer players in the world make quite less than a billion a year. SA could probably triple the salaries of the top 50 in the world to seed a domestic league and it would still be change in their couch cushions.

NBA seems like another trivial example. The combined player payroll in the league was 4.5 billion this year. A domestic league could triple their salaries, and even thirty years of that, while giving away the TV rights for free, would cost less than the laughably small estimate of that city that MBS is trying to build in the desert.

I don't see LeBron, Luka, Tatum, whoever, turning down 150-200 million dollar annual salaries. To say nothing of the MLE players who'd be looking at over 30 million a year. And then what, the TV networks would just out of principle refuse to pay for broadcast rights? I don't think so

Will be interesting to see how these things play out long term. So far Saudi sportswashing seems to have the opposite of the intended effect. For LIV Golf, if anything it just called more attention to the exact things they're trying to distract people from. Plus people being salty that their top leagues are becoming more fragmented. Though soccer might actually make more sense in the latter regard as there are already so many top leagues anyway, fans are used to it.
