Science and Technology thread

I’m one of the 10 remaining people on earth with a subscription to the WSJ (digital only, I don’t even know if the print version is still a thing). I mostly keep it for the archive. I turn on notifications from WSJ, Apple News, CNBC and The Athletic and I feel like that has me covered. Use Reddit for local stuff.

Yeah, that could be the tipping point. People hate Twitter, but they're going to keep using it as long as that's where all the audience is. Having to pay will cause a mass exodus.

I'll be thrilled if he starts charging. I hate everything about Twitter and want a sea change to happen. I get depressed every time I go on there. Even when people aren't telling total strangers to die, there's just an overall smug snarky tone that I hate. Watching 40-year-olds fire off "clever" tweets with Gen Z lingo makes me want to kill myself.

If they'd invest in combating hateful and abusive content, advertisers would cover the cost of eliminating bots. Other platforms don't have this magnitude of a problem to begin with. They need to make the correct call on what is the chicken and what is the egg here, but they need someone who isn't an idiot calling the shots first (or flipping the coin).

I don't think most people would give a second thought to paying $1/mo for Twitter, and at that price, it's actually a good idea by Musk. If you weed out people who think twice about paying $1/mo for instant news on their favorite topics (e.g., Shams/Woj for DF users), you're likely getting rid of people who just post ignorant or toxic stuff, while decent content creator types and regular readers who don't post anything will stick around.

It's possible a negligible price point would actually be reverse elastic for the demographics that matter - raising the price from $0 to $1/mo could plausibly increase the userbase among people who are willing to pay, due to the natural sanitization of the content. There's a fine line between $1/mo and whatever Musk is actually thinking about, though. At $5/mo, I'm envisioning a mass exodus to Threads.

As a reference I think I'm paying like $4 total a month for full access to NYT and WSJ right now using their promos, which last a year or so. Would find it tough to justify paying anything for a TLDR in a few tweeted words with links to the actual long form articles (that I'd have to pay for on another platform to actually read).

This theory is damaged by all the MAGAs eagerly paying $8 a month for a blue checkmark.

If Elon needs the cash, though, he'd get it faster by doing something like $3.99 per month/$36 for 12 months. Everyone likes to think they're getting a deal, even when they're buying something worthless.

I'm not so sure even $1 per month is going to be palatable to all the people who already hate Musk. That's most of the media. The majority of sportswriters, actors, comedians, etc. are liberals. Many of them refused to pay for the blue checkmark even though they could easily afford it. And they refused even though it was damaging to their visibility to lose the checkmark. The reason was that giving money to Elon so directly was a bridge too far. I don't think it's really about the amount of money, though obviously the larger the amount the easier it is to be principled. But my sense is that people are looking for any reason to leave right now.

Regardless of how you feel about Twitter, DJT Jr.'s account got hacked today and it is fucking gold. Endless, endless gold.

Eh, there are a lot of liberals spending tens of thousands on Teslas, which also publicly brands them as contributors to Musk’s wealth. I think you are overestimating how much people care about Musk when making life convenience decisions, especially if we’re talking about $12/yr over Threads rather than thousands of dollars per year over a Hyundai EV or something.

The "Subscribe" option on Twitter is wild to me. Who is subscribing to Zion O's tweets? They're essentially just homer opinions about Duke with the occasional thing he read on a message board. I don't care if it's only $2.99 a month. I get The Athletic for $1 a month and get access to hundreds of articles. I subscribe to a few $5 a month Patreons that give you things like exclusive in-depth videos.

My understanding is that you only get extra content if the person restricts certain content to subs only. For someone like Zion O., I think you would be paying for literally nothing.

He has certain tweets restricted. I know because I clicked "Read More" on one, and it wouldn't let me read it. Told me I could subscribe.
