Science and Technology thread

I highly suggest reading The Alignment Problem. It basically talks about how we need to learn how to program human nature into these models to get the desired output. This is a 180 from back in the day when Google’s image search for gorillas would bring back black people for results.

So the use case for this "amazing" technology is generating graphics for use in publishing and ads I guess? That may or may not even be accurate, coherent, or reproducible? And this is supposed to be a half a trillion dollar industry? Okay

Aren't there already millions of stock photos of white and black people interacting? Just rip off any university's promotional materials from the last 30 years.

Obviously the use case is teaching us how not to be racist

The reverse has always been true as well. Back about 8 yrs ago we were building image classification models at Facebook to predict and label what sport someone was engaged in. The first pass after training on a regular large public data set, we found that no matter what Obama was doing in an image, it predicted him to be playing basketball. No matter what Xi Jinpeng was doing in an image, he was always predicted to be playing table tennis.

Live stream of an unmanned mission to the moon that should be touching down in about 45 minutes or so. Last estimate was 6:24 pm ET for touch down. Would be 1st time in 50 years that the US or a US based company successfully landed on the moon.

I flew several of them over the weekend. I remember when the flight attendant announced what plane we were on, I was like, aren't these the ones that crashed?

Flying is fucking awful now, BTW. If the plane isn't full, the airlines just cancel the flight. Every flight I was on was overbooked by at least 8 people. Everyone brings mountains of shit with them on planes as well, so I always just gate check my bag to avoid paying $60 for one tiny carry on.

Don’t understand the endgame for Pornhub in going offline in all these states. People will see there are other totally fine sites to use if they search “porn” on Google. People aren’t going to publicly rebel or sign a petition or something, claiming their need for Pornhub.
