Soccer

I guess I misremembered... I was thinking of the Brazil-US semifinal in 2007. My bad. Will go back and edit.

Holy shit at that ending for England. 92nd minute, an own goal. I feel awful for Laura Bassett.

Huffington Post editor:

Even by English standards, that was a hellaciously brutal way to lose.

Utterly fantastic. Loved how this team's play evolved from the group stage through to the final. Always nice to see a World Cup winning team actually get better over the course of a tournament rather than simply winning by virtue of being the least-worn down.

Gold Cup semis recap

30+ years of watching games, and I've seen some doozys of poorly-officiated ones. Tonight ranked way up there, though, and I once held Mark Geiger in high regard. Embarrassing scenes.

I really have to wonder about serious corruption after last night. The US game wasn't a great officiating game, but the Mexico game was one of the worst I've ever seen.

I can't imagine why anyone would feel that way about the showcase tournament for the confederation that gave the soccer world Chuck Blazer and Jack Warner.

Not only that, it's the second game in a row.

If the very top levels of organized soccer are corrupt, why wouldn't everyone be in on it?

So, wait, I've assumed both calls were horrific and indefensible, but I finally just watched them both. Why does anyone think they were bad calls? Is it not a handball if you touch the ball with your elbow?

No. There has to be purposeful intent. Mere contact doesn't mean anything. It's basically the same rule as a kick ball in basketball.

And which two calls did you watch? Two from the Panama game? Because only one of those was bad. The other bad call happened in the quarter finals game.

Got it. That does seem crazy, then.

I only watched the Panama recap, haven't seen the CR clip.

Panama call

Torres was either tripped up by or had his foot stepped on by the Mexican player right there (think it was Esquivel, I forget). Could/should have been a foul in Panama's favor.

Costa Rica call

Only thing I can think of to justify that call was that Miller's contact took away any chance Peralta had of challenging for the ball. It was a really soft call, all the more so considering that the ref missed other penalty shouts earlier in the game. I do honestly believe that it might've been a make-up call for this claim being denied earlier in extra-time, which would've been a legitimate penalty decision: https://vine.co/v/e6b2r3jvhD7

Win Gold Cup on Sunday.
Allegedly hit a reporter on Monday.
Get fired on Tuesday.

It seems only natural that the force of nature known as Miguel Herrera would have such a whirlwind 48 hours.
