Here is a fucking insane stat. The last time Duke and UNC lost in the same round of the NCAAT? 1979. Never happened once in the K era.

That's actually the most insane stat I can remember re: Duke basketball.

Odds have gotta be infinitesimal given not only the amount of times both schools have made the tourney in the same season, but also how good both schools have been over that course of time (ie fewer first round exit-type teams, and thus diminished amount of possible rounds both teams could be eliminated in). Truly mind blowing.

An odd thing to consider but I wonder if this game is close late if the fans of the first game’s winner will get behind the underdog Duke like what usual happens with Duke’s tournament opponents. State fans probably wouldn’t, but if Marquette wins, they should want Duke to win, right?

Most people in that arena won’t know how good Houston is. They think Houston is a fraud 1-seed like Gonzaga, romping through a bad mid-major conference.

Figure that NC State fans would rather get the nostalgia-heavy Houston matchup than see Mark Mitchell again. As for Marquette fans, who knows?

This is why I don't care about the "Duke hasn't beaten a higher seed since 1994" narrative. Losing five games in a row over 30 years to teams that were favored is hardly some alarming streak.
