Duke Basketball 2012-2013 Discussion Thread

I can't imagine that he'll go undrafted after that performance. How many 6'11 guys are there in this draft that can shoot 3s, post up, block shots, and play perimeter D? I think he can be a lot like Bonner. Not quite as good of a shooter, but better at everything else.

I wonder how the extra couple of feet will affect his three-point shooting. He always shot from right at the line and he kind of pushed his shot to the hoop. I wouldn't exactly say he ever demonstrated NBA range. I guess if nothing else, he can be really effective in pick and pop situations with his excellent midrange jumper.

Everyone who takes it to the next level has to move three feet back.

Yea, but the trasition is easier for some than others.

With guys like Dre and Seth, you know they won't/wouldn't have trouble with the NBA three because they have beautiful arcs on their shot and they've demonstrated unlimited range. As lhys said, Ryan has a line drive shot and never shot it from very far behind the line. I'm sure Ryan will be able to knock down some threes in the league, but he'll have trouble being as proficient as he was at Duke.

yeah, ryan wasn't very consistent from 3 throughout his duke career, either. I just don't see him as an nba player because he doesn't have a specific skill to survive as a specialist. his all-around game is good by pro standards though. he seems to me like the type who would thrive in a good european league.

This expresses my point better than I could have possibly done.

This is going to sound harsh, but my feeling is that Seth won't be able to use his off arm to make space in the league, and he won't be allowed to switch his pivot foot on every possession either. I would take Seth in a game of horse against damn near anyone, but IMO he has a lot of work to do in order to be anything other than a spot minutes, 3 ball specialist.

Dre at least has a pro body, but who knows what he can do after all he has been through.

I see Kelly as a Toni Kukoc type player. He can score in a lot of ways, plus he can handle the ball very well for a 6'10 guy. What really worries me about Kelly is his durability. Big men with bad feet don't last long in the league. I don't think he will have Kukoc's range but he can post up smaller 3's and 4's and dribble past less mobile 4's.

Just my two cents. I hope they all succeed, but I think Ryan has the most to offer an NBA franchise.

Slow day at work so I watched the first half of the home game vs NC State. Our offense was ridiculous that half, but NC State's defense was just embarrassingly pathetic. That was about as fun as a first half of an ACC game can be.

I've watched the first half of that game at least five times. I don't bother with the second half because I have no desire to see Richard Howell sink midrange jumper after jumper.

Didn't wanna start a new thread for this, but watching the Baylor game from the 2010 tournament right now. I'd completely forgotten how bad Kyle Singler was in this game. I'm about five minutes into the second half and he's been dreadful on the offensive end. As bad as he's been on offense, Lance has been even worse. Mason, to this point, has given some really solid minutes. Made some beautiful passes from the middle of Baylor's zone and also had a nice finish off a dish from Jon. Miles is absolutely clueless on defense. And Nolan's been an absolute BAWSE on offense so far. Carried us.

Lance went 1-7, I believe. I think his only make was the putback dunk. He personally accounted for all of Udoh and Acy's blocks.

That was Nolan's best game of that season. Jon was pretty badass in the second half.

The last five minutes of that game is maybe my favorite stretch of Duke basketball ever. I get chills just thinking about it.

He finishes with two baskets, one dunk at the very beginning to put us up 2-0 and then the tip dunk at the very end. Hit a pair of big free throws with about 8 minutes left.

Hugeeeeeee shot from Jon with 5:17 left to tie the game. Down three, Jon takes a three and misses but Mason comes up with the offensive rebound, finds Kyle on the wing who shovels it to Jon to tie it up.

Yes. This is where the magic starts. If I'm drunk and just want to watch the best part of the game, I always start here.

Reminds me of Hurley's shot versus UNLV.

Fuck yes, this game was incredible. The three Jon hits with about 2:30 left was all set up by Zoubs, who got the ball at the free throw line with his back to the basket and faked Nolan's way on the right wing to take the defender while Jon dove towards the left wing. Zoubs delivered a perfect pass to Jon who buried a three to put us up six.

Beautiful basketball against their zone.

My other favorite moment, besides the putback dunk, is Nolan's three off his own missed FT. The bench yells "Shoot it," he does, and then gives five to Coach K before running down the court.
