There's a trail leading to Blatter somehow, but he didn't get to where he is today without covering his tracks, so it'll take some serious digging. Like Zack said, Putin/Russia coming to FIFA's defense was pretty predictable - chance to show up the US yet again and rally the smaller countries on Blatter's side, and of course, there's the not-small matter of how their 2018 bid ended up successful.

Actually, that vote is going to be real close with the UEFA support now. Would be pretty embarrassing for Blatter if his own confederation backs his opponent. Ali claims 60 votes outside UEFA. Another 45, and he's got it.
